I've been listening to the premiere recording of Stanford's substantial Mass in G, Op.46 (1892) for soli, chorus, orchestra and organ -

This is a lovely piece, very much a companion to Dvorak's Mass in D, Op.86, lyrical and celebratory by turn. The performance is excellent, and though the acoustic is resonant this suits the festal nature of much of the writing with brass and tympani prominent. A lovely release.

Oooh, marvellous! I didn't know this was out, but I will be getting it immediately! I love the requiem and the Stabat Mater, so I'm sure this won't disappoint. Stanford never does. With this and with the Violin Concerto no. 2 his rehabilitation is ever closer. If only the operas were getting the same attention!
