I must confess to my shame I had never heard of Robert Hughes. Now I have got around to listening to his first symphony and it's really very good. Think John Joubert or George Lloyd at his best. Tense mid C20 with saxophones in the scherzo and finale! I shall be listening to the other works intently.
I trust Dundonnell will upload the balance of Hughes music for you!! All of it is quite good..

Have now listened to the Essays and the Sinfonietta and am still impressed! Two remaining works to go.
The thing you need to know about the Australian arts scene is that Australian doesn't give a proverbial for the arts, and so what little attention they do get is usually channelled through two or three artists in any particular field: novelists, poets, composers &c. Thing is, most of these aren't very good, ie any Australian artist you've heard of won't really be very good (mostly having achieved their eminence by the old mates networks). The exception is Sculthorpe.
So bit of a surprise to find quality compositions from Australia, though I guess from his biography he was a bit of an outsider.

I agree, esp re Sculthorpe who fascinates me as few composers do. The only other Aussies (hope I did not forget one) I like are Carl Vine, Graeme Koehne, Eugene Goossens and Peggy Glancille-Hicks - because their music is readily available. The newer ones they do promote such as Brett Dean and Ross Edwards bore me to tears. By contrast, New Zealand does a much better job of promoting their fine composers and they have a baker's dozen with great talent. It is also my non-biased opinion that the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is the best orchestra in Australasia.

. . . other Aussies . . . I like are . . . Eugene Goossens , , , Not Goossens, please! He was soon sent back to Britain a broken man, because of his pornographic thoughts. Claudio Arrau suffered much the same fate.

Claudio Arrau suffered much the same fate. Yes, too bad about Goosens, none the less, I enjoy his music. Percy Granger is another very fine Australian composer who was also accused (possibly unjustly) of unhealthy sexual indulgences. But so much for the distraction. Another fine Aussie is Arthur Benjamin, but Robert Hughes who is the subject of this thread, is much lesser known. I detect a tad of the Oriental or even Arabic in his music as well, esp the Sinfonietta.

I think that you will find that the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is rather good!
No mention of Malcolm Williamson amongst the Australian composers mentioned ???
....and, yes indeed, Sir Eugene Goossens was not Australian but British. He was both a fine composer and a fine conductor and the unfortunate "incident" which ended his conducting career with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra was a tragedy which broke his spirit and his health. It was something which would receive absolutely no attention today.....and rightly so!!

What's the story with Arrau?
August 1957. He is said to have winked at a "pretty policeman."

The omission of Williamson is an obvious "OOPS!" on my part. While he is often lumped in with the Brits he is an Aussie..thanks for the inclusion. Yes, agree on the Melbourne Symphony, also the Tasmanian Symphony does some very fine work as well.
