Among James Stuart's Utube posts is the Forbidden Rite Ballet by Robert Highes, a Scottish-born Australian composer. I have 2 Orchestral Essays (1953 and 1982) and A Sea Spell For Orchestra (1973) by Hughes that are very fine works. I have not seen much info or music from this man, has it slipped thru the cracks?  (his 1951 Symphony has been described as the finest symphony composed by an Australianand yet, I have not seen it).  He may often be confused with another Aussie of the same name who was sorrowfully a renowned counter-culture whacko author and malcontent.
I think this is the composer:

Hughes was, quite assuredly, an Australian composer,,,,,,so further discussion of his music should really take place elsewhere ;D.

Suffice to say that his music IS well worth investigating; as is that of Raymond Hanson-whose Symphony No.1(1952) is another fine example of Australian symphonism from the mid 20th century.

Born in Scotland, no less, poor man has a blurred nationality..
maybe this blurring of natioanalities has hampered the knowledge of his music.

Yes...I do not think it appropriate on this forum, which prides itself on the avoidance of such language in reference to an individual, to use the term "whacko" for the late Robert Hughes the art historian :(

From what I read about him, lets just say he would not be a suitable role model for my kids.
have it your way, world-reknowned art historian and brilliant scholar then.

I have recordings of the following works by Robert Hughes:

Symphony No.1
Sinfonietta(1957)
Synthesis
Suite "The Forbidden Rite"
"Sea Spell"
"Xanadu"
Essay No.II

I am quite happy to re-upload any of these for those who might be interested and missed them the first time they were uploaded.

Dundonnell, I apologize for getting off-topic with this fine composer.
I missed the Sinfonietta, Synthesis and "Xanadu" if you would be so kind to redo.

I must confess to my shame I had never heard of Robert Hughes. Now I have got around to listening to his first symphony and it's really very good. Think John Joubert or George Lloyd at his best. Tense mid C20 with saxophones in the scherzo and finale!
I shall be listening to the other works intently.
