No one's brought up Antanas Rekasius (1928-2003), who only seems to have one recorded work of his: his moving Symphony no. 7 In memoriam, which certainly whets the appetite for more of his music. Here's an informative article on Rekasius: http://www.mic.lt/en/info/291

Indeed Antanas Rekasius was a very tragic and talented soul, I would describe his music as having a disturbing despairing dissonance unlike anyone else, perhaps Schnittkeish, but not derivative.  Certainly not for the thin-skinned.
I have these pieces in addition to the 7th symphony(on Utube)..

Concerto for 2 pianos(1982)  - unknown performers (Utube)
Music for Strings I,II,III - unknown performers (incredible part 1 on Utube) love this!
Symphony No. 2 - unknown perfprmers
Symphony No. 5 "Segments" - unknown performers

don't know much of commercial availability, except Music for Strings was released on a Finlandia CD in 1995.

Do give it a try, Jeffrey! It's not easy listening by any means, but it's a powerfully anguished statement that reaps great rewards.

I have a few Melodiyas:

Vainiunas  Piano Concerto No 2
  and Piano Concerto No 4
Rachiunas Sym No 6
Klenitskis Summer Day
Dvarionas : A Small Suite for SO
Montvila: Vilnius Poem
Basinskas:Sym of Bells
Klova Concerto for 2 pfs and Orch
Raciunas: Legend Skerco
Jurgutis: Skambesiai Cantata
Gruodis: Dance of Life and From the Past of Lithuania, sym poem
Balakanskas Sym in 3 movements
Rekasius: Diaphone for Cello and Cha Or.
Balakanskas Sym -Concerto for Pf and Or
Dvarionas Piano Concerto
Nauyalis: Autumn Sym poem
Daunoras: Dear Lithuania.. Song of Youth, Nocturne  ... Day Dream
Klova Pictures of Vilnius
Paltanavicius: Vilnius Aquarelles  sym poem
Some lovely sounding things there, Mr. Dave. Anything suitable for upload would be magnificent, but for me - chorally as usual - the cantata (& maybe the 'symphony of bells') would be particularly welcome !

rkhenderson Great site, thank You.

Sorry to all. If somebody is interesting into lithuanian classical music, that is not available on CD, could possibly write to Lithuanian music information centre, maybe they will help. One polish musicologist said something like that to me, I didn't proove this to now, but someday I check it maybe. I am quite sure, that they speak good english.

it looks like this classical podcasts has several pieces I was going to upload.. including BASINSKAS – “Bell” Symphony  ... you can tell these all came from LP's hence the static ...  this represents a good sampling of music during the Soviet age from Lith.

Its a shame that Juozas Domarkas,  Donatus Katkus,  Robertas Šervenikas or Abelis Klenitskis has not re recorded these pieces and made them available in the modern world of CDs like Neeme Jarvi has Estonian works.... even wonder if Domarkas is still alive?

I'll be in Vilnius over the weekend and see if I can locate any CDs of these composers... you would think that Vilnius should have something??    other than Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga.....
