Interesting you think of Nystroem's music as "dour and cold"! Well, I guess when compared to the music his uber-Romantic contemporary Atterberg, it is! Yes, the Second and Third Symphonies are some of the pinnacles of Nystroem's output. I have been particularly captivated by the intense, dark opening movement of the Second. The finale of the Third is atmospherically beautiful, showcasing a totally different side of Nystroem's personality.
