It sounds a most dismal experience. It seems to be a matter of cultural differences, though (not that I'm making any kind of excuse, of course!); I recall a recital of Tagore settings (including some of my own) given by soprano Jane Manning and pianist David Mason years ago as part of a long event at the Tagore Centre in London at which the same kind of thing occurred; had the Wigmore Hall police been on duty, they'd probably have resorted to water cannon, tear gas, kettling or perhaps even all three to deal with the problem.
