More annoying than funny,as are most April Fools, including Musicwebs! (A bit like finding the public school boy humour of Monty Python funny! ::)) Haven't they got anything better to do?! Incidentally, not being that interested in Holmboe (I haven't really heard any!) I'm not just grouching because I fell for it! ;D I've only just become aware of it via this thread.

Humor is a terrible thing, no doubt.

The trouble with April Fool jokes on the internet is they are still there long after 1st April. Tradition has it that an April Fool prank after noon on 1st April shows the prankster to be the fool. This would have been a rather poor specimen at best.

At least I can stop regretting a missed opportunity; thanks for clearing it up.

More fool those 'school boys',I say,'Gauk'!
Any more 'War Symphonies',by the way? Does Havergal Brian's 'Das Siegeslied count? Often rated Brian's worst symphony, even by so called 'Brianites';at least judged by allot of the comments I have seen posted at the GMG Brian thread.

Malcolm would rate Nos. 14 and 26 as the poorest Brian symphonies I recall. I happen to rather like No.14 ;D

Indeed! I was actually referring to posts at the GMG forum. I know MM is very enthusiastic about No 4. I vividly recall his wonderful verbal evocation of the symphony 'firing' up my own enthusiasm for the work (which later cooled). But I recall a point when just to say anything positive about No 4 seemed to be the catalyst for a volley of bricks and bats, followed by 'mums the word'! As to No 14 (and 13*). I don't know as much about Brian as MM and never will, but IMO they are two of Brian's most absorbing symphonies and firm favourites of mine

* sorry,26! I had some idea thirteen was one of them?!

The Brian 4th is like Mahlers 8th in style..I think it is much akin to eating liver..there is no middle ground here

I am not a great fan of either work, so I am partly with you there ;D Mahler 8 is yet another work which has a magnificent opening and then becomes less interesting IMO. It's by some distance my least favorite of his symphonies. Brian 4 is a difficult work to come to terms with for sure.

That's very cool.  So Tikhon Khrennikov, Jr is the grandson of the soviet era composer and Gabriel Prokofiev is grandson of Sergei Prokofiev and also a composer.  Now we need Dmitri Shostakovich Jr. to pick up the pen and become a composer then we can have a redo of the 1948 denunciation.

I really enjoyed listening to this composers Cello Concerto just now.  Very lyrical and finely crafted.  The excerpts of his Stalingrad symphony were also very good.  A composer to keep an eye on.
