Viols have interesting sound. It is not exactly cello.
I didn't know about Forqueray. They have it as CD of the month.

Aha, Forqueray and Marais - very sophisticated music indeed :)
Much music for the viola da gamba was notated in tablature, rather than on staves - for example in this piece by that most eccentric of English composers for the viol - Captain Tobias Hume :)

Thanks very much for that. I saw this notation used to write Irish songs. I find it difficult. It will take me a long time to figure out. But I learned that this notation was taught in schools here in Ireland as recently as 50 years ago (maybe more). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GpjzL7sIQE&feature=relmfu

What was the notation used for in Ireland?
For the viol it's very logical - it shows the six strings, and where to put your fingers on them :)
I had a chance to learn the viol for a while at college, and the tablature notation isn't hard to learn... in fact after a few weeks it becomes very comfortable :)
