A number of universities make doctoral theses, often extremely useful sources of otherwise unpublished information, freely available with the consent of the author. One of these is Durham, which has a thriving music department under Dr Jeremy Dibble. The following are valuable analytical studies of -

Alexander Mackenzie (1847-1935) by Duncan Barker - http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/1441/

Frederic Cowen (1852-1935) by Christopher J Parker - http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/1834/

Hamish MacCunn (1868-1916) by Alasdair Jamieson - http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/2456/

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) by Catherine Carr - http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/2964/

Another valuable doctoral thesis, this time from the University of York: music-making in Leeds with particular reference to the triennial festival -
