I'm wondering whether anyone can shed any light on a work by Jonathan Harvey called 'The Cry of Purgatory'. It is listed in the Sound and Music (BMIC) database as being a BBC commission for a series of Holy Week/Easter short TV programmes under the title 'The Cry':

I can find no reference to it in Harvey's published work lists, so wonder whether it was either withdrawn, or is in fact another piece (perhaps Resurrection (1981, for double choir & organ) but under the programme title.

I appreciate that video isn't the normal format for this forum, but an off-air recording of the programme would be very interesting to hear and might clarify things!

(Interstingly, another work commissioned for the series - David Bedford's Cry of Humanity - has been recently posted on YouTube: )

Many thanks for your help

It seems to be a 15 minute piece from 1989 for choir and organ so must be different from Resurrection.

I've managed to listen to the recording of the work of this title at the British Library. It is, as I thought might be possible, a recording of his 'Resurrection' for double choir and organ (1981), albeit in an abridged version, hence the shorter duration. Interestingly this work itself borrows elements from his earlier choral work 'I love the Lord'.

I think that 'The Cry of Purgatory' is listed as a commission as each composer in 'The Cry' series was commissioned to make the music video - i.e. the music was (as in this case) not necessarily commissioned, but the video was. As in the David Bedford video, Harvey gives a spoken introduction about the video.
