There is new book  called A natural history of the piano: The instrument, the music, the musicians - from Mozart to Modern Jazz and EVerything in Between by Stuart Isacoff.

I am quoting from review:Isacoff loosely divides the pinao's timbre into four sounds based on earth, water, air and fire and creates four pianistic stlyes thus: Rhythmitizers (e.g. prokofiev, Fats Domino), Milodists(e.g. Bach, Schubert), Alchemists (e.g. Debussy, Teholonious Monk) and Combustibles (elbl Beethoven, Stravinsky ,Elliott Carter, Jerry Lee Lewis).
THe book is peppered with quotes from belovedpianistssuchas Alfred Brendel,Emanuel Ax and Murray Perahia.

There is discussion of different  piano schools.Embedded into thistopic is the subject of piano competitions :events that have'proliferated faster than 'Fibonaccci's rabbits'
