I found the article from BBC Music Magazine Oct 2001 page 30:
Neeme recounts why he left Estonia: It was Neeme's championing of another Estonian composer that was to lead to his own decision to emigrate. In 1979, he performed Arvo Part's Credo with the ERSO in Tallinn. The day after, everyone in the orchestra and on the radio committee was sacked.
A year later, the Jarvi family, packed their bags for America. It was the last straw, remembers Neeme.
" Long before that I was becoming worn down by the endless counting of points: how many Russian works had to be played; how often you could and could not perform Estonian music. All Western music was considered to be German. and our symphony orchestra (ERSO) members had to do long spells picking potatoes on collective farms. Can you imagine the London Philharmonic doing that?"
