I'm a bit of a technological simpleton, so it may very well be that this question is essentially dumb to begin with, but be that as it may....

I'm wondering what the general practice is with respect to saving all this music we swap around.  I save the music to my computer hard drive (duh!) for long term storage, but for everyday usage and listening I convert everything to mp3 (which, of course, most of it already is) and burn it onto disc.  However, (a) I understand that your typical commercial recordable CD doesn't have an infinite shelf life (although I haven't yet experienced this myself), and (b) yes, indeedy, I HAVE had the experience of losing a bunch of music in a hard drive crash.

I have contemplated getting an external hard drive specifically for my music files but it seems to me that doesn't actually solve the problem, in that an external drive can crash and burn as easily as an internal drive.

I'm sure I'm not the first person to confront this perplexity.  Any thoughts/suggestions/advice?

Is it possible, irony of ironies, that vinyl is actually a better medium for the long term preservation of music?
