This is the same performance that is on the Columbia (Japan) CD, but since that CD is exceedingly hard to obtain, I thought I would provide a link to this incredibly moving symphony, which was recently uploaded to YT:
Lasting 82 minutes, this symphony is on a grand Mahlerian scale and is undoubtedly among the most accomplished symphonies written in the past 50 years. The work is generally late-romantic in style (dissonance is limited but not absent) and follows in the great symphonic tradition of Bruckner, Mahler and Shostakovich. Depicting the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945, the symphony poignantly and dramatically recounts this tragic event in history. The finale gradually emerges from the darkness into light, producing a deeply affecting conclusion. You cannot afford to pass this masterpiece up!
P.S. Another great work inspired by the bombing of Hiroshima, Masao Ohki's Symphony no. 5 (on a Naxos Japanese Classics CD), is another deeply moving work, if not quite on the level of the Samuragochi.
