Quote
Cowell: I would love to like his symphonic output after hunting it for so long, but I keep being disappointed. Considering how striking his piano music is, his orchestral music, such as I have been able to hear, seems anaemic.

Cowell, who was one of the children used by Stanford University in establishing the upper limit for genius on the first IQ tests, wrote most of his piano music in his early litmus-test-for-genius years. His symphonies, on the other hand, were mostly written later, after he was released from prison. (These days the once unpublishable story of Cowell is common currency and the Wikipedia article has a good overview of it.) I see the symphonies and Hymns and Fuguing Tunes (in part) as his bid for normalcy. He continued to write more questing and mischievous works in non-traditional forms during his later decades. I was present at an early (1954) California performance of Symphony 11. It made quite an impression with the audience. There were even a few boos.

Easley Blackwood is a name to conjure with. I first came across him thanks to a terrible library LP (in a very enlightened - then - public library) with his 2nd symphony. It was completely scratched, but nevertheless, the power of the music caught my imagination. It took me decades to finally catch up with the piece on CD.

There's a CD of Blackwood's second???  Where?  Where?  Where?

There is no cd recording of the Blackwood Symphony No.2.

That, alas, was what I thought as well, until I read the earlier post, but nevertheless hope springs eternal....

Right.  I have nos. 1 & 5 as well.  Still, that was, for the moment, quite the rush you gave me!

As I posted in the Requests forum, I have No 4 as well - but no functioning player to play it on *sighs*.

I've got Blackwood's 2nd & 4th, another couple to add to my list along with one of Ernest Bacon's one of Gruenberg's and a couple of Gutche's, for uploading at some point.

Blackwood's Symphony no. 2 has just been uploaded to YT in a performance by the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell:

Am listening to the Third Symphony by Benzecry. If you have a copy, listen to the second movement and then listen to the scherzo of the Dutilleux First Symphony! Benzecry's rip off of Dutilleux is even more obvious than Christopher Gunning's. Both composers should have been sued!

I will try (not sue) them for myself, the few things I heard from Benzecry so far sounded very eclectic indeed. But ripping is another matter.  :o

… music is not only an `entertainment’, nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.  RVW, 1948

Ellie Siegmeister is another composer whose symphonies have been ignored by the recording companies and of course Roy Harris who still awaits a complete cycle (No 1 is in desperate need of a new modern recording). There also isn't a complete Sessions cycle though they are all available on CD, No 2, one of the more important US symphonies needs a modern recording. I would certainly back the calls for a Diamond cycle and a Williamson cycle and a Rosenberg one too, plus composers like Hans Eklund.
