Oh, goodie-more Soviet music! This upcoming disc from Delta will feature Rakov's Violin Sonatas 1 and 2 as well as his Sonatinas for violin and piano. The violinist is David Fruhwirth and the pianist is Milana Chernyavska.

It is often said that violinists are less adventurous than pianists when it comes to obscure repertoire, but Fruhwirth is definitely one of the more adventurous violinists out there today, with pieces such as the VCs of Singaglia and Weigl in his repertoire :) Let's hope he records them! Here's his website: http://www.davidviolin.com/2012/wordpress/

Thanks for this news. Rakov is probably miles from my first choice of a Soviet composer that needs better representation, but he's still quite deserving, especially in light of the vast heaps of French neoclassical music that's already on the market.

A few months back, I came across a great set of five pieces Rakov wrote for bassoon/piano and an entire book of cello/piano works. His style nicely mixes neoclassical and jazzy elements while showing a deep love of the instruments he's working with.
