This attractive-sounding 2-disc set from Msr features solo viola/viola and piano works by women composers, mainly from the 20th century (with the exception of Le Beau). The only piece that might be familiar is Clarke's semi-famous (very famous in the viola world ;D) sonata. All of the pieces featured on this set are in a tonal style. Here are the contents:
-Fernand Decruck (1896-1954): Viola Sonata in C-sharp minor (also exists in versions for viola and orchestra and alto saxophone and piano) (1943)
-Marcelle Soulage (1894-1970): Sonata for solo viola, op. 43 (1930)
-Louise Adolpha Le Beau (1850-1927): Three Pieces for viola and piano, op. 26 (1881)
-Minna Keal (1909-1999): Ballade in F minor for viola and piano (1929)
-Pamela Harrison (1915-1990): Viola Sonata (1946); Lament for viola and piano (1963)
-Lilian Fuchs (1901-1995): Sonata Pastorale for solo viola (1953)
-Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979): Viola Sonata (1919)
The performers are Hillary Herndon (viola) and Wei-Chun Bernadette Lo (piano).
