Walter Braunfels' powerful and impressive String Quintet in F-sharp minor, op. 63 has already been recorded before on RCA and (as has been mentioned before) CPO is planning to release a disc including a string orchestra version of it, which I can't wait to hear! Nonetheless, I thought it might be worth mentioning this new Profil CD, which contains the quintet along with a version of Strauss' Metamorphosen arranged for seven strings by Rudolf Leopold (b. 1954). The description at RI presents the interesting fact that the Braunfels quintet was composed while he was digging an air-raid shelter for his family, which no doubt contributed to the piece's dark and unsettled atmosphere. The performers are the Gringolts Quartet, along with Ryszard Groblewski (viola), Dariusz Mizera (double bass) and David Geringas (cello).
