This upcoming Naxos disc will feature the third recording of British-born German composer Eugen d'Albert's sole Symphony in F major, op. 4 (1886), as well as the Prelude to the opera Tiefland, op. 34. The symphony is an expansive piece (around 52 minutes) in the Brahmsian tradition which recalls works such as Dvorak 2, Brahms 2, and Urspruch's Symphony in its pastoral beauty. Some may find it a bit derivative and overlong, but it's a glorious piece chock full of Brahmsian lyricism. The filler on the disc is the Prelude to Tiefland, which I have never heard before. It lasts 11 minutes, and according to Naxos, it sets "a pastoral scene for the torrid events to follow". Another pastoral piece (not that that's bad)! The performers are the Leipzig MDR SO under Jun Markl (who did an excellent Debussy series that really scraped the bottom of the proverbial barrel). It has been commented here that Naxos is recording repertoire that has already been recorded before in good performances. Unfortunately, that is also the case here, as the Symphony received a fine recording by Cpo about three years ago. Still, I shall be looking forward to this recording.
