Thanks, Toby! Filippenko (Ukrainian, 1912-1983) is a composer I have long been curious about. He composed six string quartets and two symphonies for string orchestra, among other things. See his worklist: http://russiancomposers.org.uk/page441.html Edition Silvertrust has published his first three string quartets, which they describe as masterpieces comparable with Shostakovich's quartets! They have also included sound clips of each movement. I'll provide the links:

SQ 1: http://www.editionsilvertrust.com/filippenko-string-quartet-1.htm
SQ 2: http://www.editionsilvertrust.com/filippenko-string-quartet-2.htm
SQ 3: http://www.editionsilvertrust.com/filippenko-string-quartet-3.htm

Definitely a composer who should be investigated further. If only he had written more big orchestral works!
