Chandos have recently commenced a British Clarinet Concerto series. The first release featured the most famous of these-the Stanford, Finzi and Arnold No.2.
This got me thinking about the paucity of such Clarinet Concertos. I could think of only two such concertos prior to the Second World War-the Stanford and the Rawsthorne; fewer, I reckon, than Oboe Concertos, for example.

What follows is an attempt at a comprehensive list.....although, obviously, open to addition. I have ruthlessly excluded works entitled Concertino (Elizabeth Maconchy wrote two).     So, Chandos.....which do you intend to add ???  The Cooke 2nd, the Gipps, the Hamilton  would be a good start ;D

There is also 'Movements for a Clarinet Concerto', the realisation by Colin Matthews of the incomplete and abandoned Clarinet Concerto by Benjamin Britten written for Benny Goodman.

The realisation of the first movement, from Britten's short score, was available on a Hyperion CD and, in my view. disclosed what could have been a very fine Concerto.  As neither the second or third movements were even sketched by Britten, Matthews used parts of Britten's incomplete Sonata for Orchestra for a third movement and used the Mazurka Elegiaca for 2 pianos as the basis of the second movement.  The result is, albeit not the complete Clarinet Concerto which Britten would have written, a Clarinet Concerto which contains music which is genuine Britten.  I think it is a superb work.

It is available complete on NMC's 'Unknown Britten' CD of 2009. ::)
