The states of Germany were unified into an Empire in 1871, finally uniting this north central European country, and at that time a new decimal coinage system was established. Coins of one Pfennig to 1 Mark were issued for the Empire as a whole, while each individual state was permitted to issue its own type of 2 to 20 Mark. After World War I it became a republic, but many factors combined to lead to the rise of the brutal Adolf Hitler in 1933. World War II ended in disaster for him and his government; in 1949 Germany was divided into two separate countries, each autonomous.
Monetary System: 100 Pfennig = 1 Mark.
