A federation in southeast Asia formed in 1887 from the French colony of Cochin China and the protectorates of Annam, Cambodia and Tonkin. Laos was added in 1898. When the Japanese occupying forces departed in 1945, the communists under Ho Chi Minh came to control much of this area. They were ousted by the returning French, but eventually the French departed.
