Occupies the eastern two thirds of the island of Hispaniola, which lies between Cuba and Puerto Rico. The land is extremely fertile and supports a variety of tropical agricultural crops. Mining and cattle raising are also important. Area: 18,704 square miles. Language: Spanish. Capital: Santo Domingo.
