One of the Leeward Islands in the West Indies, off the coast of Venezuela. Discovered by Spain in 1499, it passed to the Dutch in 1624, and was a colony until becoming part of the Netherlands Antilles in 1954. Too dry for agriculture, it has an economy based on oil refining and tourism. Area: 174 square miles. Languages Dutch, Papiamento, English and Spanish. Capital: Willemstad.
