A large island off the southern tip of India, Ceylon came under British control around 1800, gaining independence within the Commonwealth in 1948. It changed its name to Sri Lanka in 1972. Primarily agricultural, it exports tea, rubber and coconut. Area: 25,332 square miles. Languages: Sinhala, Tamil and English. Capital: Colombo.
