The Kingdom of Cambodia, on the southeast Asian peninsula, became a French protectorate in 1863, and in 1887 was federated with Annam, Tonkin and Laos to form French Indo-China. It regained full independence as a constitutional monarchy in 1963. The monarchy was abolished in 1970 and Cambodia became the Khmer Republic. Area: 66,000 square miles. Languages: Khmer, French.
