A former crown colony on the north shore of South America which gained independence as the Republic of Guyana in 1966. The agricultural area along the coast produces sugar, rum, rice, molasses and copra. The interior jungle produces timber. Mineral products are exported including gold, diamonds, manganese and bauxite. The escarpment rising behind the coastal plain is the site of many famous waterfalls. Area: 83,000 square miles.
