An Islamic state on the Mediterranean coast of north Africa, Algeria was nominally part of the Ottoman Empire until being colonized by France in the nineteenth century. It became an independent republic in 1962. Although much of the country is desert, it has petroleum and other minerals, while the coastal plain is highly agricultural. Area: 919,951 square miles.
