This upcoming disc from Centaur features Rubinstein's mighty PC 5 in E-flat major, Rubinstein's masterpiece, IMO. I find Rubinstein a highly uneven composer, but that may be due to the fact that many of his compositions have not recieved very good performances on disc. The disc will also feature Rubinstein's Caprice Russe, op. 102 as well as the Overture to "Der Thurm zu Babel", op. 80 (first recording, I believe). The pianist is Grigorios Zamparas and the performers are the Bohuslav Martinu PO under John Ceander Mitchell. :)

Great to hear! Those old Banowetz recordings are very uneven and it will be interesting to hear someone else's take on the concerto and Caprice Russe. Rubinstein has always been a curiosity of mine.

I once read that Liszt was a great admirer of Rubinstein, but suggested he should be much more self-critical, inferring, I think, that his work was rather uneven (and sometimes very long!). Advice he clearly ignored!
