I think it's very unfair to judge Dutch composer as not interesting (Expi) or worthless. As a Dutchman I know we never had a Beethoven or a Brahms or a Sibelius. However I find it very strange, even nationalistic, to think of composers within the borders of countries. We're Europeans, living on that continent for ages, and we've produced the most important composers ever. Period.

No, it's not meant personal. The ones really to be bashed are the DG's with their endless back catalogue releases and their Netrebko preoccupations etc. Regarding cpo there's a saying in Dutch 'veel beloven, weinig geven, doet de gek in vreugde leven'. I don't know the right translation, but goes a bit like 'promise much, give little, and the fool will live happyly'. That's how I see cpo a bit ;D

There's the cpo bashing again. I don't mind at all when and how they release X or Y, and if - in my life - I'll nearly miss the last release of, say Glass' symphonic cycle, so what....... I'm gone anyway.

[...] My first impression listening to the opening of one of Veale's other symphonies (not sure at this point which one) was that I was listening to the main theme for a Western movie, something in much the same spirit as The Magnificent Seven, and that I was just waiting for the good guys to come riding over the horizon on the movie screen of my mind [...]
That must be his 3rd Symphony and that one can be enjoyed on Youtube.

Personally, I find nothing amiss with such an impression.
Me neither, Arnold, Alwyn, VW, great composers who also wrote seriously fine film music are close to my heart as are seriously fine film music composer who also wrote great non-film music: Rozsa, Korngold, North, Waxman etc.

My order with the Gardner/Veale SACD arrived friday (over here in The Neths.) and I gave the Veale, considering the very positive review on this post, a try and I really was astonished by the quality of the music. I like the rhythmic drive that can be found in every movement. You'd wonder what other treasures are still undiscovered.... The RSNO is a very versatile band and the trumpet playing is, to my ears very risque and daring, I like it. The last movement has a kind of rhythmic melody I keep thinking is like from some Western Movie.... and my first impulse was 'hey Dimitri Tiomkin is over here....'
