1  Assorted items / Commercial recordings (vintage, new and forthcoming) / Re: First recording of Respighis complete ballet "Belkis - Queen of Sheba" on: November 21, 2013, 09:16:23 pm
I have it from the horse's mouth that no CD set is planned. There is some wonderful music not included in the suites which is probably why Respighi planned a second suite but died before he could produce it. I have recorded and made a two CD set. Quadri 1-3 on one and Quadri 4-7 on the other.
Unfortunately the producers have seen fit to replace Respighi's original recitation limited to two places in the ballet with ongong narration of the story which impinges on the overall effect of the music. A disadvantage for non-German speakers is the narration language - German. Although there are English sub-titles the spoken dialogue remains intrusive.
I just hope it inspires someone to make a purely orchestral recording of this very lavish and monumental score.
2  MEMBERS' CORNER / Members' wish lists & requests / Philip Glass - The Making of the Representative for Planet 8 on: November 17, 2013, 09:39:55 am
My old tape deck is getting cantankerous and it's made rather a mess of Philip Glass' opera The Making of the Representative for Planet 8.
It was broadcast from the Coliseum, if I remember correctly. Unfortunately the opera has never been released commercially either from the London performances or any other. IMHO it's one of Glass' more impressive scores and I would dearly like to listen to again.

I have a copy of Satanella or The Power of Love from 1977. The sound quality is not fantastic, but you get a good idea. I can upload it, if you wish.
4  MEMBERS' CORNER / Members' wish lists & requests / Braunfels and Kálmán on: January 03, 2013, 02:01:16 pm
Did anyone record Deutschlandradio Kultur's second broadcast of Braunfels' Ulenspiegel in June 2011?
It was effectively a studio recording and without the intrusive stage noises the original broadcast had. I've only just got around to editing it and found there's a short drop out in the first act. Who knows when CPO will release it!

Also, I stupidly missed Deutschlandradio Kultur's broadcast of Kálmán's Die Bajadere on December 29th 2012. There seems to be no immediate prospect of a repeat so I'd be very grateful if someone wasn't asleep between Christmas and New Year and managed to push the buttons.

Many thanks in advance if you have either.
5  ARCHIVED TOPICS / The listener / Re: "The Gramophone Magazine" on: November 29, 2012, 09:12:17 am
I'm surprised it's taken you so long, Dundonnell. I gave up with the Gramophone years ago and rely entirely on my nose and it rarely fails me!  :) Sometimes I read reviews in IRR retrospectively and learn that my nose is in good working order!
