226  Assorted items / Commercial recordings (vintage, new and forthcoming) / Re: Small Moszkowski revival happening? on: August 05, 2016, 11:53:05 am
This recording is indeed to be applauded. BUT it is IMHO a pity they chose to record a number of small, relatively trifling (though certainly attractive) pieces (some orchestrated by other hands) and the suite "From Foreign Lands" which has been recorded before, rather than some more substantial works - e.g. the 3 orchestral suites without titles or the 4 movement tone poem "Joan of Arc", scores and parts for which are all in the Fleisher Collection. Still, as I say, the CD is to be welcomed, and perhaps it will lead to further recordings of Moszkowski''s orchestral works.

Are CPO still interested in a disc of Queen Mab/ The Bells/ Byron? That would be an ear-opener ...

I am keeping the pressure up.

Well, fear not, Cilgwyn. "Ships" has been recorded, and Howard Griffiths has promised to send me a copy of his first edit. When that will be I know not. But I shall report in due course.

I have just been informed that CPO's second disk of orchestral music by Holbrooke is scheduled for release in September. This is the one containing the Auld Lang Syne Variations, the "Grasshopper" Violin Concerto and "The Raven".

Balapoel, you list a Cello concertino in A (1836) and a Piano concerto in C minor (1835) by Mackenzie, but these dates must be wrong because Mackenzie wasn't born until 1847. What is your source for this information please?

A nice list, Balapoel. Unfortunately, however, some of these works are well and truly lost; and some are worthless (I'm thinking here of the Joseph Street concerti, which are woefully amateurish and uninspired).
I will go through the list and identify those which, so far, a number of researchers have failed to find. Of course, I would be very happy if some of those subsequently turned up - but I'm not holding my breath.

If the Gaze Cooper is the performance by John McDonough and the Malta Philharmonic under Michael Laus, it is available commercially on the Cameo Classics label and copyright of that company.
233  Assorted items / Commercial recordings (vintage, new and forthcoming) / Re: Roger Sacheverell Coke, 1912-1972 on: July 22, 2016, 10:08:10 pm
The CD is scheduled for release in summer 2017, but if the editing goes well it might be out sooner - but definitely not till next year. It will be part of the RPC series.

It is quite extraordinary that we do not have recordings of his two major late symphonies-the Autumn Symphony for chorus and orchestra of 1934 and the May Symphony for soloists, chorus and orchestra of 1943.

I agree it's a great shame we lack recordings of these two important major works by Novak. But it may be that Supraphon are reluctant to undertake what would be two expensive recording projects - chorus, soloists (in the case of the "May" symphony) and large orchestras for both.

Great coupling. How lovely!

Re. the disk in the previous post, two of the pieces, including the major one, are orchestrations by other people! The Clarke concerto is not really a concerto at all. It's an orchestration of her viola sonata. I wish someone would orchestrate and record Holbrooke's 3rd piano concerto, which at least has the merit of being a genuine concerto.

Both are fine works and deserve to be revisited.

I agree, and I am looking forward to this disk. There are those who don't care for Berkeley's music - but I hardly think Lyrita is getting more uninteresting. Quite the contrary as far as I'm concerned.

I'm sorry to say I have never heard of him. But that doesn't  mean anything. The music is delightful.

I wish I knew, Corentin. I don't - but I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be by Rozycki.

Having listened yesterday with a score to the Chandos/Handley recording, I realize that probably 15 minutes + were cut altogether, so, having just ordered my Lyrita copy from Dutton, I can't wait to hear the work complete again.
