1  Assorted items / Commercial recordings (vintage, new and forthcoming) / Re: CPO Release Plans on: August 23, 2015, 09:49:07 pm
I just saw that Mike Herman has published an update to his discographies on MusicWeb, for CPO he lists :

- Badings : Symphonies 4 and 5 - Porcelijn - CPO 777 669-2
- Holbrooke : Violin concerto, Auld Lang Syne, The Raven - Griffiths - CPO 777 636-2
- J N David : Symphonies 2 and 4 - Wildner - CPO 777 577-2
- J N David : Symphonies 3 and 7 - Wildner - CPO 777 964-2
- Braunfels : Sinfonia Concertante, String Quintet - CPO 777 579-2
- Larsson : Symphony 2, etc - Manze - CPO 777 672-2
- Larsson : Symphony 3, etc - Manze - CPO 777 673-2

All those are labelled " 2015 ".

Badings 4 & 5, exactly what I wished  :D, also David 2 & 4 should be a glorious cd.
2  ARCHIVED TOPICS / In-depth discussion of selected compositions / Re: Sibelius's "Kullervo" on: August 17, 2015, 08:57:13 pm
I first heard Kullervo also with Berglund but in the Helsinki remake. It is very much in the mold of early Sibelius like Lemminkainen and, especially, the Wooden Nymph. I don't find it inferior to those other orchestral works.

I didn't figure at that time that the structure of Kullervo consist of the imbrication of two components. A four-movement symphony with a vocal finale and, in the middle of it, a cantata in one movement.

I think Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony suffers the same undeserved prejudice of being long-winded.

I also hope cpo will go on recording the remaining Badings symphonies.
I can't even dare to dream that some company will bring out his 4 violin concertos!

Concerning VCs of the 20th century, this still remains one of the largest gaps
in recorded repertoire together with those of Stanley Bate and Erland von Koch.

Yes, the violin concertos are intriguing, none of them are available anywhere I think. I suppose it would need more than one violonist to record them all, which is fitting because there's also double concertos. :D

As far as I know Badings is the sole dutch composer to be compared to, say, Malipiero or Honegger. He has a generous inspiration, a strong musical personality, contrapuntal wizardry, good sense of orchestral balance and structural proportions, his writing is insightful for most if not all intruments...

I don't think there is many composers resurrected by CPO who can compare favorably on those points (and for some on any points). It is not that frequent to rediscover a major voice, and not a derivative one, that is scarcely played and recorded !

Another remarkable symphony is Glonti 1st available on the DL section. I see that Melodiya has also recorded the 6th, there is twelve Glonti symphonies in total.  :o

Having just downloaded the Badings Piano Concerto from You Tube :) :).......

The irony is that the later Badings symphonies are mostly very short.

Two CPO discs could contains:

(a) Nos. 1, 4 and 5: 14 minutes, 36 minutes and 25 minutes respectively(75 minutes)

(b) Nos. 5, 8, 11 and 13: 29 minutes, 18 minutes, 7 minutes and 10 minutes respectively(64 minutes)

CPO have already recorded Nos. 2, 3, 7, 10, 12, 14 and 15. Other companies have recorded Nos. 9 and 15.

The 1st symphony has been discarded and the 10th is in fact a revised version of it. Based on the timings of the remaining symphonies I count 170'. Even if I would expect Porcelijn to be significantly quicker in some instance, it's a little too much for two CDs. Also the bane of symphony cycles is choral requirement (as exemplified by Rosenberg) ; so maybe the 6th could be left for an all choral CD (not necessarily by CPO), isn't that a great idea an all choral Badings CD ? ;D

We would have something like :

- 4, 9 and 13
- 5, 8, 11 and 15

(both 60' to 70' in duration).

Also my memory confused me on the 4th which is - much like the 5th - a mix of lyrical (just hear the slow movement of both symponies !) and more tense sections, caped with an uplifting finale.

Maybe the next Badings CD will be the first funded with the help of the Art-Music Forum ? :o

Thank you and CPO for those news. I am not yet familiar with all the symphonies of David but the 2nd and 4th are very expressive and - from the CPO roster - I don't see a better choice than Wildner for them. For Kallstenius I like very much the 5th, a little less the 4th maybe.

For Badings its disappointing because I find him to have the strongest musical personnality of all the dutch composers CPO has recorded and  Porcelijn seems very sympathetic to the style. Maybe the CDs didn't sell well enough comparatively to other projects ? Anyway I hope they will reconsider their decision. There is still oustanding unrecorded symphonies : the dramatic 4th a worthy successor to the 3rd, or the more playful 5th, the choral 6th is also quite successful for this difficult genre. All the others are at least interesting because of the ever resourceful technique of Badings.
7  Assorted items / General musical discussion / Badings Symphony no.9 alternate version on: November 04, 2013, 02:51:08 pm
This symphony for string orchestra has already been recorded but Badings has produced an alternate version with the addition of parts for two oboes and two horns. So it might be interesting for CPO to record this version.

I don't think CPO has currently a more stimulating serie, at least for the modern era. I find the 2nd and 7th symphonies exhilarating and the 3rd is stunning. Also Porcelijn is perfect for this kind of music full of vitality, let's hope for more album's !

A lot of works by Sulek have been uploaded here, some of them are also on youtube. I would recommend :

- Last Adam a cantata that reminds me of Sibelius for some reasons (maybe the sonority of the language)
- Organ Concerto "Memento" a sort of Bach/Liszt homage with added features (military drums notably)
- Symphony n°6 a fruit salad with Tchaikovsky, Bruckner or Prokofiev being the fruits
- Classical Concerto n°2 for string orchestra
- Two Interludes from Coriolan a short work which might be a good introduction to Sulek.

I have come to the provisional conclusion that the impression left by Sulek's works is more related to the intensity of the interpretation than the expressivity of the work itself. Many of the other broadcasts are conducted by Pavle Despalj, a tireless champion of the composer, but I find him - maybe harshly - a tepid conductor.

I have just discovered this article about the british premieres of Sulek second symphony and Hartmann fourth. I don't know if political ideology is an obsession of the author or of the time :

Also I have found an organ piece Triptih that may have eluded some aficionados (the interpretation is a bit tentative) :

The file of Sulek fifth symphony seems unzipable. I have downloaded it twice, but the zip file opens with an error warning and doesn't work. The file of Sulek's third works fine.
