I've read somewhere that "celtic" spirit by Bax contrasts with idyllic wiew of english composers with its savage description of Nature.I agree only
partially :
1) Also in RVW works (Riders of Sea,First Symphony) Nature isn't always idyllic
2) What is precisely "Celtic" spirit? It should be Irish and Welsh folklore opposing English?
P.S.
IMHO Sainton' s wonderful Moby Dick resemble more to RVW seamanlike than Bax
Bax's music was unique in that although he was English, much of it expresses melancholic beauty and the anger of a mystical land being savaged by the industrial revolution and by his native country. Sorry to say that, but that is what Bax musicologists say.
So it is about pure love of what was Ireland, from the heart and not a superficial patronizing political correctness...His place in history was quite unique. Hence it was a very difficult path act to follow..
Dear Jolly Roger
It was not a my statement i read it here:

P.S.
IMHO also Grace Williams isn't particularly celtic
