Now available for pre-order on Chandos web page:  https://www.chandos.net/products/catalogue/CHSA%205279

Booklet downloadable now:  https://www.chandos.net/chanimages/Booklets/CHSA5279.pdf

I recently decided to explore Smyth's available operas, having previously been largely uninterested in her music, purchasing Retrospect Opera's re-release of

The Wreckers [see: https://www.retrospectopera.org.uk/SMYTH/Wreckers.html]

and recordings of:

The Boatswain’s Mate [see:  https://www.retrospectopera.org.uk/SMYTH/Boatswains_Mate.html]

and

Fête Galante [see:  https://www.retrospectopera.org.uk/SMYTH/FeteG.html].

Whilst I am still in the process of getting fully acquainted with the operas, after a few hearings of each, I am finding them very enjoyable and memorable in musical content.    Very good purchases.

I await The Prison with eager anticipation.

36  Assorted items / YouTube performances / Parry's 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin' on vimeo on: June 13, 2020, 10:39:12 am

Not YouTube but vimeo and from 6 years ago! A modern performance of Parry's 1905 setting of Robert Browning's poem 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin' for tenor, bass, chorus and orchestra.

An older performance is available on YouTube and the British and Irish Music catalogue in the Downloads section on this site.

Unfortunately no performance details.

Apologies if someone has noticed this before and drawn attention to it.

39  Assorted items / Commercial recordings (vintage, new and forthcoming) / Stanford's 'Shamus O’Brien' on Retrospect Opera [Possibly] on: May 01, 2020, 10:51:07 pm

After the CD release of The Travelling Companion on the SOMM label last year and the stated intention to release last year's Wexford Festival Opera’s performance of The Veiled Prophet on CD (RTÉ lyric fm label?), Retrospect Opera have announced that they intend to record in 2021, in a joint venture with BBC Radio 3, Stanford's most famous opera Shamus O’Brien

The caveat is the recording will be subject to funding (and, presumably, the length of the current crisis which may prejudicially affect recordings).

I hope it happens.

See: http://www.retrospectopera.org.uk/STANFORD/Shamus.html

The Retrospect label has released several rare operas including, recently, Ethel Smyth's Fête Galante, and intends to record George Alexander Macfarren's The Soldier’s Legacy.

I hope it comes with an English version of the libretto.

I can confirm, for those who may be interested, the cpo CD comes with an English (and German) translation of the Croatian libretto.  :) :D ;D

44  Assorted items / Commercial recordings (vintage, new and forthcoming) / Re: Hyperion Romantic Piano Concertos series - Gablenz & Paderewski on: March 16, 2020, 10:57:27 am

The Gablenz can be heard on Youtube from a German radio broadcast - Joseph Stompel (piano), Szimon Kawalla (cnd)/Kraków Radio and Television Orchestra.  It seems to be about 45 minutes in length.

See "Jerzy Gablenz - Piano Concerto in D-flat major, Op.25 (1926)" and KuhlauDilfeng2 channel

or

"Jerzy Gablenz - Piano Concerto (1926)" and Bom Cabedal channel.
45  Assorted items / Commercial recordings (vintage, new and forthcoming) / Re: New Dutton CD releases - February/March 2020 on: March 13, 2020, 07:31:16 pm

My copy of Sullivan's Haddon Hall arrived today.

After ripping the CD to iTunes and uploading the tracks to its database, I went to the Dutton web page to download the librettos of Haddon Hall and its companion operettas - from where the booklet said they were downloadable.  At present they are nowhere to be seen.  :-\ :'(

It's possible that their availability has been delayed.  However, both Chandos and Hyperion win hands down over Dutton when its comes to downloading CD Booklets.  Dutton's Classical CD Booklets are nowhere to be found on its site. A pity  >:( :( :-[
