1936  Assorted items / General musical discussion / Re: Welcome on: September 09, 2012, 07:12:36 pm
Indeed, welcome,Tapiola! Of course, there's always the army,if you're young enough, but I don't think they play much classical music there! ;D The GMG forum (of which I am a member) is another one that's less excessively moderated. You need some,of course, but not TOO intrusive! Fortunately,,as far as I can make out, everyone's getting on very well here,so far! :)
Stlll as Amphissa (I think?) pointed out,'they've' got they want & we've got what we want,so everyone's happy,really! :) :) :)

1937  Assorted items / Commercial recordings (vintage, new and forthcoming) / Re: Upcoming BIS Releases on: September 01, 2012, 10:37:30 pm
No,I think (if you were referring to me,Dundonnell) you detailed it all very clearly & vociferously,in you're days,on the Gmg thread. It just gets a bit to you at times,as you know. You start thinking are cd labels really listening to what we music lovers want,or are they just some kind of self serving & very costly vanity project?! Churning out all the usual suspects to keep themselves afloat & gradually ticking off their own private 'shopping lists' of composers & music, they have always dreamed of hearing,themselves.. Which would explain all those mysterious omissions,in their catalogues,e.g. Bis churning out complete cycles of virtually every important scandinavian symphonist, you can think of,but always, inexplicably, avoiding the influential & highly rated,Rosenberg,in favour of (for example) Alfven & Dag Wiren! And Chandos who mysteriously avoid even answering forum posts,or portions of emails or letters relating to a certain,William Havergal Brian!
Anyway,'nuff' said! ;D
On a personal level,I have to admit I stopped looking at the Bis pre-release lists some time ago! They just don't hold any excitement for me anymore! But,as von Bahr might say, each to his own! ;D
1938  Assorted items / Commercial recordings (vintage, new and forthcoming) / Re: Upcoming BIS Releases on: September 01, 2012, 12:01:11 pm
We are not going to get a Hilding Rosenberg symphonic cycle from BIS as long as Robert von Bahr remains in control of his company. Simple as :( :(
I wonder what von Bahr has got against Rosenberg? He would appear to fit into the BIS remit! :o I presume he just doesn't like his music, full stop! But what about people who do? Who is he? Mussolini! :o
1939  Downloads by surname / Downloads: discussion without links / Re: Russian and Soviet Music on: August 31, 2012, 01:35:26 pm
I don't know anything about ballet dancing, but I know who Darcey Bussell is & I've seen enough newspaper & glossy photos of her, over the last few years,to paper my wall....if I wanted to! ;D
1940  Assorted items / Commercial recordings (vintage, new and forthcoming) / Re: British music on Chandos on: August 30, 2012, 08:35:03 pm
This reminds me of a letter I sent to Chandos some years ago. Apparently my letter was handed to Brian Couzens himself, who expressed enthusiasm for my suggestions, which included, amongst others,Holbrooke & Ethel Smyth (I can't remember the others! :(). They assured me that they were very interested in recording Holbrooke & were planning a series of Ethel Smyth cds!
That was over ten years ago! ;D
1941  Assorted items / Individual composers / Re: Constant Lambert (1905-1951) on: August 30, 2012, 12:48:48 pm
Squashed flat as a bloomin' pancake! ;D I love these furry animal stories, don't you?! ;D Very droll! Not so sure that the actual narration will be quite as entertaining as your synopsis! In my experience, musical entertainments with speech, tend to fall as flat as that poor duck! :o :( Peter & the Wolf springs to mind. Great music but I'm not sure how many times I'd want to listen to the story.......even at bedtime!!! ;D
On a more positive note, novelty items like this can be entertaining, now & again & the selection of items on the cd looks quite tasty! :) If it's as good as that Bliss cd,it should be good! I just hope it doesn't lead to a Lambert binge, that's all. And I'm not referring to the kind he went on.......unless the dent in my wallet REALLY gets to me,of course & I'll be like Ray Milland in 'The Lost Weekend!' :(
Anyway, thank you for clearing up the confusion over the Piano Concerto....'s! I knew I could rely on you,Albion! ;D
1942  Assorted items / Commercial recordings (vintage, new and forthcoming) / Re: British music on Chandos on: August 30, 2012, 12:24:25 pm
The British Works for Cello & Piano looks 'up my street'! Nice to see a bit 'more' Bantock....and from Chandos! Also,Foulds,Parry....sounds good to me! :)

(I was hoping for some Holbrooke or Daniel Jones, myself! ;D)
1943  Assorted items / Individual composers / Re: Constant Lambert (1905-1951) on: August 30, 2012, 12:59:13 am
Hm! I've just realised, the performers on Hyperion cd,pictured by Albion,of the Piano Concerto & Mr Bear Squash-you-all-flat are (amongst others) the Nash Ensemble. I've got the Hyperion cd 'Bliss: Rout & rhapsody' and it's very good, indeed! :) Looks like,I'm going to be putting 'Mr Bear Squash-you-all-flat!' on my 'list',after all! :o ;D

1944  Assorted items / Individual composers / Re: Constant Lambert (1905-1951) on: August 29, 2012, 07:32:57 pm
Now you're making me wish I hadn't taken my copy (of Last Summers Will & Testament) down to the charity shop! :( I'm still wondering what they're going to make of Geirr Tveitt in between Des O' Connor & 'The Wurzels'? ??? :o)
Actually,I think it's a little too bleak for me. But then it's supposed to be! ;D
I seem to recall that Malcolm Arnold regarded it as a masterpiece & that when it was publicly performed some years ago, there was a flurry of interest, which quickly died down. In fact, the last time I mentioned Lambert on a forum I didn't even get one reply! :) Or come to think of it,maybe I just mentioned it in the wrong thread! ;D

Regarding the Piano Concerto........'s? I was recently listening to the Marco cd of Lord Berners 'The Triumph of Neptune',which I DO like. On a whim,I thought I might buy some music by his friend,Constant Lambert. I WAS going to go for his 'Music for Orchestra'. Then I got diverted by recordings of his Piano Concerto. Unfortunately, there are two concerto's. One for Piano & nine players & another which has been completed by someone else. The recording of the latter has received some decidedly mixed reviews.
Also I don't like the sound of some of the couplings;especially 'Mr Bear Squash-you-all-flat!' :o :(

Indeed! And I'll be active on this site & happy about it! :)

Hello to those who know me and those who don't. I haven't been able to join earlier, but now I found the time. For those who don't know, I'm a member of the GMG and UC forums, but the latter establishment has become too unwelcoming. I already see that the atmosphere here is very relaxed and open.

--Johan

Another UC member wrote me he feels the moderators there act like drill seargents, before whom everyone is
expected to stand up and salute.  The site still holds some interest, but that pretty well sums it up.

Hm?! ::) :-X That rings a bell!
But as I said in my earlier post......... ;D
And we've got a nice forum here! :)
1947  Assorted items / General musical discussion / Re: Welcome on: August 29, 2012, 03:35:53 am
Indeed,Dundonnell speaks wisely! You have to move on,look to the future. If you dwell on the past it'll eat you up,get you down! Let them enjoy their new remit at this Unsung Composers Forum & good luck to them! We've got a nice new 'all era' forum & hey,we can talk about any composer we like!!!
Isn't that just great?!!! :) :) :)

Erm,end of lecture! ::) ;D
1948  Assorted items / General musical discussion / Re: Welcome on: August 28, 2012, 07:43:45 pm
Hello Johan! :) :) & everyone else!
It's great here! :)
Yes,UC has changed. Apparently, even Gaze Cooper is too progressive for their new remit! :o :o
Anyway, here's to the new forum & a big thank you,to 'our hosts!
1949  Other Subjects / Television / Re: BBC scrubs BLUE PETER from BBC1 on: August 19, 2012, 04:12:17 pm
Ah yes,Blue Peter! Of course, they have dedicated childrens channels now,but even this isn't a very good excuse, considering the amount of sport they're quite happy to show (even the news gets shifted for Wimbledon, these days!). Having said that,to a 'lad' of my generation, one quick peep at Blue Peter is enough. Loud, irritating presenters, trying too hard to sound like the juveniles they are addressing, makes me long for the halycon days of Valerie Singleton & even, the formerly annoying,Johnny Noakes! ;D I can even remember how upset I was when they replaced Blue Peter with the 'boring' Apollo landings....the bounders! (Every one knows the Apollo moon landings were faked with egg cartons and sticky black plastic, for goodness sake! :)) Later on,I enthusiastically collected the beautifully produced PG tip cards of 'The Race into Space' (anyone here remember those?),so I presumably changed my mind? Having said that,I must confess to preferring 'Magpie',the fondly remembered (by some) ITV imposter. Ironically, while complete episodes of Blue Peter have yet to reach dvd, complete episodes of Magpie have been released by,the admirable, Network! For collectors of vintage tv,the dvd label equivalent of Dutton,Chandos or cpo! Long may they continue! :)

1950  Other Subjects / Literature / Re: Bulwer-Lytton Awards for Worst Writing of 2012 on: August 18, 2012, 01:21:25 pm
A pity this competition isn't serious! I was just thinking, this is a competition,I could win! I wonder if they take serious entries?!! :-\ ;D
I'm glad they're not the 'Marie Corelli Awards',though (another possible contender?!) I must admit,I DO quite like some of her novels! :-[ :o
