He certainly should :( :(

The 10th and 12th are-I still have to say-pretty poor compared to what went before but, I agree, the 13th is just plain dreadful :( :(

This is not a reply to your questions unfortunately.......

but mention of JoAnn Falletta and her enterprising choice of repertoire makes me think how much better she might have been as the conductor for Naxos to go to for their aborted Roy Harris series. Marin Alsop-so very obviously-had no interest ti the music :(
2808  INDICES / Composer reference / Re: Composer Catalogues: Orchestral and Choral/Orchestral Music on: September 12, 2012, 02:49:54 pm
If anyone is wondering about the rhyme or reasoning behind my current choice of composers to catalogue.....it is now being determined by the existence of examples of their music being available for download from this site :)

Oh, stop it ;D ;D ;D

Life's too short as it is ;D

Right, Question (a) answered ;D  The Suite for Viola.
2811  Assorted items / General musical discussion / 20th Century British Violin Concertos on: September 11, 2012, 01:52:23 pm
It might be worth pointing out that with the recent addition here of Iain Hamilton's Violin Concerto No.2 "Amphion" the number of Violin Concertos by major British composers not currently available has diminished yet further :)

Although not commercially recorded, our British Music Archive contains the Violin Concertos by

Arthur Butterworth
Arnold Cooke
Peter Racine Fricker No.2 "Rapsodia Concertante"
Iain Hamilton No.2 "Amphion"
Alun Hoddinott No.2 "Mistral"
Daniel Jones
Kenneth Leighton
John McCabe No.2
Robert Simpson
William Wordsworth

The "still missing" are the Stanley Bate No.2(1943), the Goossens Phantasy Concerto(1948), the Hoddinott No.1(1960), the Holbrooke "Grasshopper"(1909-28), the McCabe No.1 "Sinfonia Concertante"(1959) and the Robert Still(1969).

This should remind us all of just how impressive and important the British Music Archive on here actually is :) It represents the most significant collection of British music-most of which is not commercially available-anywhere in existence. It is a standing legacy and a testimony to the enormous generosity of collectors from all over the world. Superbly catalogued by Albion(John) it is a treasure-house beyond compare :) :)

Splendid :)

One of the very few Finnish symphonies by a major composer previously unrecorded.

Now all we need are the Aho 6th and 15th and the three Ernest Pingoud symphonies ;D
2813  Assorted items / Commercial recordings (vintage, new and forthcoming) / Re: New Duttons for October on: September 11, 2012, 01:25:34 pm
Yes indeed :)

A better selection of British music Dutton has put out than in recent releases.

Delighted to see the Alan Bush Symphony No.4, the Havergal Brian 13th and English Suite No.4 and the Bax Phantasy for Viola and Orchestra.

These all plugs important gaps in the recorded repertoire.

Three questions though-

(a) an RVW Suite ??? What would that be ??? With the recent release of the early Bucolic Suite and the Serenade I thought that the only remaining early RVW was the Symphonic Rhapsody of 1901-03.

(b) Arnell's Dagenham Symphony ??? ??? Not a work which appears in my Arnell catalogue ::)

(c) What on earth has happened to the recording-last summer-of the David Matthews Symphony 7 with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under John Carewe ??? ??? Dutton normally release music they have recorded with a few months.

PS:

I can answer my own question (b) ;D

Hi Marek,

Nice to see you here :)

You will see that I have posted a number of orchestral catalogues of Polish composers(Bacewicz, Baird, Karlowicz, Kilar, Maklakiewicz, Malawski, Nowowiejsji, Panufnik, Serocki, Sikorksi, Szeligowski and Tansman) since we last me elsewhere.

If you are able-anytime-to have a look at these and point out errors I would be most grateful :)

Many thanks for directing me to Youtube :)

Not only have I managed to get hold of Alexander Raichev's Symphony No.2 but I have also found the Miloslav Kabelac Symphonies No.3 and No.4.....and successfully downloaded both ;D ;D

My reaction to this sort of news is always a mixture of "great, another new piece to hear" and "oh dear, another hole in my bank balance" ;D ;D

But, yes, thanks for the news :)

The Organ Concerto is only supposed to 22 minutes long. What else is on the cd ???

We ARE now well off-course ;D

To an extent I was being deliberately provocative ;D  I can perfectly well sit through a Mozart Piano Concerto and I should try harder with Lutoslawski.

But, as for Rachmaninov and Delius ::) No, I am sorry, I simply cannot abide the former's wallowing in nostalgic romanticism and I loathe the Second Symphony AND the Second Piano Concerto. Delius simply bores me to tears; all this lying around in summer gardens or drifting slowly down a river.........I keep on wanting to shout "get on with it". "Brigg Fair" is ok, I suppose....but that's about it.

As for Mahler ???  I am a Brucknerian and I dislike intensely the current obsession with Mahler's music. He is the most over-recorded composer around at the present time. Mahler's First and Second are among my favourite works of all time (the absolutely heavenly closing 15 minutes of the 2nd reduces me to tears everytime I listen to it) but the later symphonies are harder-going for me. I can appreciate their greatness.....but give me the Bruckner 7th, 8th and 9th above them any time ;D

Anyway.......I fear this has drifted far too far from the subject of the thread and that is something I always deplore :)

I get accused sometimes of an excess of enthusiasm to get hold of as much 20th century, mainly orchestral and tonal, music as I can get my hands on ;D ;D

And, yes, sometimes I find a piece disappointing but I always welcome the opportunity to hear it...at last :)

And I therefore am very grateful to Atsushi for all his uploads (as I know Greg is too :)).

And-just for the record- music I dislike ??? ???  The Mozart Piano Concertos, anything written by Rachmaninov after 1900(with the exceptions of "The Isle of the Dead" and "The Bells"), almost anything by Delius, Mahler's Symphony No.7, later Lutoslawski, late Stravinsky and late Tippett.

My goodness, Colin, you have been treated undeservedly rude in more than one place :o! That is just terrible >:(! Being the kind, knowledgeable, and hardworking person that you are, I can't imagine why anyone, anywhere, anytime would have anything against you! Thank goodness you and so many others have a safe, happy home here :) :) :).

Sadly, a love of Music does bring together people of all sorts and a tiny handful of these people use website forums to try to prove a point by being gratuitously offensive.
It IS only a tiny, tiny minority but when people are unnecessarily rude and unfairly offensive then it is hurtful. Things can be written, diagreements or criticisms made in a manner which is courteous, polite and reasonable.........and THAT is how it should be :)
