1  Assorted items / Individual composers / Re: John Frederick Bridge (1844-1924) on: February 02, 2021, 11:14:52 am
Well done! "Westminster Bridge", innit?
2  Assorted items / Individual composers / Re: Favourite orchestral transcriptions on: February 02, 2021, 11:14:07 am
One orchestrated-because-the-composer-didn't: Stanford Violin Concerto no 2 (another Jeremy Dibble). One of my favourite Stanford works, and that is saying something.

One just for fun: Mackerras's Pineapple Poll from Sullivan. Just genius.

One more Dibble: extracts from Parry's (likely dreadful had it been completed) opera "Guenever", especially "King Arthur's Farewell to Guenever"

There's a guy who specialises in reconstructing film scores from the audio -I forget the name. He might be just the person for the job!
4  Assorted items / Individual composers / Re: William Shakespeare (1849-1931) on: January 28, 2021, 12:23:36 pm
And reverse the order
5  Assorted items / Individual composers / Re: William Shakespeare (1849-1931) on: January 27, 2021, 11:22:52 am
Always been interested in him just for the name really. It used to tickle me that there were composers called William Shakespeare, John Milton, William Wordsworth (any more?)
6  Assorted items / Individual composers / Re: Frederic Clay (1838-1889) on: January 27, 2021, 09:33:44 am
Excellent work!
7  Assorted items / Commercial recordings (vintage, new and forthcoming) / Re: Stanford Te Deum, Op.66 and Elegiac Ode, Op.21 on: January 26, 2021, 07:31:27 am
They are some of Stanford's finest works. I enjoy the recording of the Te Deum broadcast, thank you for that! But a professional recording will be even more welcome.

I think Toccata also do late romantic nineteenth century. Anyway, they produce very high quality recordings of what they do choose.

I'd second almost all of these! Some of them are probably in the pipeline and others we have practically no chance of hearing!

I might add Smyth's Entente Cordiale, but only if the score can be located. It's not known to be lost, but no one seems exactly sure where it is. Also I'd put on German's Princess of Kensington, very high on my wish list.
10  Assorted items / Individual composers / Re: John Francis Barnett (1837-1916) on: January 24, 2021, 11:11:06 am
That would be interesting to hear. I believe that is the symphony that is complete as to melodic line, but is mostly a single note. I have a recording of a realisation of it from more recent times.

I didn't realise at first that this was the nephew of The Mountain Sylph Barnett
11  Assorted items / Individual composers / Re: Frederick Corder (1852-1932) on: January 24, 2021, 11:09:16 am
Great work, John! I really hope we can hear more of Corder one day.
12  Assorted items / Commercial recordings (vintage, new and forthcoming) / Re: Stanford Te Deum, Op.66 and Elegiac Ode, Op.21 on: January 24, 2021, 04:21:22 am
Interesting combination: Stanford and Whitman. Not someone I would imagine he had a lot of sympathy with, but he can always surprise. This is great news
13  Assorted items / Commercial recordings (vintage, new and forthcoming) / Re: Chandos and British music on: January 17, 2021, 10:35:25 am
Yes, let's hope so, They always produce such high quality recordings too.
14  Assorted items / Books about composers and music / Re: The Symphonic Poem in Britain 1850-1950 on: January 14, 2021, 11:17:03 am
Oh lor, now to be strong and remind myself that I rarely listen to symphonic poems, even by my favourites, but I fear I shall succumb, especially as a paperback is available (I'd be able to resist the 70 pound hardback more easily).
15  Assorted items / Commercial recordings (vintage, new and forthcoming) / Re: Ethel Smyth - The Prison on: August 13, 2020, 07:36:11 am
My order (for Japan) has apparently been delayed but I hope to have it next week!
