Title: Many 'obscure' works uploaded onto archive.org
Post by: northern on August 07, 2020, 11:55:43 am
Further to my comment re Raymond Warren, I don't know whether members are familiar with this site but there are lots of interesting works which are not on this site or on Youtube. So far (and I haven't got very far!) for instance , to my own liking I have found the works listed below which gives you an idea of what's available, and I'm sure there are many other works which members will find preferable to these. Look for the entries which are hand written cd inserts as these can be streamed. Click on the typed black title below each entry to open a new page of the full contents of the discs, as many of them have additional works on them which are not apparent from the front listings(all fully labelled) . The commercial cd entries are, not surprisingly, only available as 30 second clips.

Raymond Warren - Symphony 2, Violin Concerto, Quartet No.2
Seoirse Bodley - Symphony No.3
Wilfred Josephs - Symphony No. 2
Antonio Bibalo- Symphony No. 2
Alan Bush- Suite of Six (quartet) Suite for Two Pianos and a better (audio) recording of Symphony No. 3 which is a UK performance.
Maurice Karkoff -Symphony No.6
Ingvar Wieslander -Symphony No 2 and another, forgotten which !!
If you haven't seen the uploads, you'll spend hours trawling through them. The quality is variable, but generally good, for old radio broadcasts.

I see also Torbjorn Lundquist's Symphonies 5 and 8 can be streamed too. I'll leave it at that!

I should add that what you found on archive.org is a part of the huge collection of the legendary Miklos Pogonyi (more or less the stuff he had digitized – there was even more on tape). Miklos's collection was truly vast. In his last years, I exchanged a good deal of music with him, which was always fun. At that point, he was already very ill, and in March 2017, he passed away aged 71. In his last years, he was pretty much worried about what to do with his collection. Finally, donating it to archive.org has obviously been a very good idea.

I've been looking for the Napravnik quartets recorded on Czech radio for years now. Glad to see one of them. Any luck with the other two (1, 2)?

Also, do you have a direct link for Miklos Pogony's collection? I can't find any direct link.

The link is as follows:
https://archive.org/details/pogonyi-cds (https://archive.org/details/pogonyi-cds)

Maybe one addition as for what can be found in this collection. Most of the stuff is either from broadcasts or from live performances since Miklos mostly focused on non-commercial recording in his late years. There are some LP transfers here and there but not on a larger scale.

Why is the collection titled "Miklos Pogonyi CD Collection of 20th c. Contemporary LATIN AMERICAN classical music, and it's description refer to it as consisting of "music by LATIN AMERICAN & HISPANIC composers and performers"?

Yeah, there's some of that, - but it's a miniscule part of the entirety.

No doubt the title does not fit. I guess the persons in charge either did not know much about classical music or did not have a closer look at the collection or both options hold true.

Must be, of course, - but difficult to intuit why the mis-statements identified that particular connection (i.e. Latin American).

Thanks for this thread, have greatly enjoyed reviewing this collection and of course found many new and interesting composers and works. One in particular that seems to deserve more attention is the American Hilmar Luckhardt, seems very well put totgether and orchestration is beautiful in my opinion. There are many others I didn' know before and am glad to have found: Mihalovici, Weissensteiner, Karl Marx for example.

This is all great, but can it be legally downloaded into your collection? It's wonderful to be able to stream something you've never heard before, but what are the proprietary regulations?

As with many other Internet "platforms", Internet Archive (IA) content is often uploaded by individuals. Just as with YouTube and other platforms, IA responds to requests for takedown if a copyright holder complains that the content violates copyright ownership. However, those who upload material come from many different countries and their laws often vary from U.S. law. So, as with other platforms like YouTube, the content is assumed acceptable unless a copyright owner requests takedown.

Just as with YouTube, a lot of older recordings, especially from broadcast or LP or old CDs are either out of copyright of ignored by the copyright holder because no longer available for sale commercially.

Book publishers have been more aggressive, engaging with IA in legal battles for years, so far unsuccessfully, regarding the IA book lending policy, which conforms to the same policies used by all public and university libraries nationally.

The IA copyright policy can be found at the bottom of this page. https://archive.org/about/terms.php[/u]]https://archive.org/about/terms.php (http://[u)

Just as with YouTube, I think users can safely assume that, if the video/audio/or other material is there, no copyright holder has requested a takedown, and so can be downloaded.

Finally, under U.S. copyright law, if any material is made available for educational purposes and is not redistributed for commercial purposes, it can be legally shared with others (within limits). IA presents itself as a platform for historical and educational information.

In the end, I ain't fretting over this issue.
