Title: Joseph Marx Eine Herbstsymphonie
Post by: Dundonnell on March 17, 2019, 02:41:37 am
Although I find the music of Joseph Marx to be somewhat over-heated in its lush romanticism for my tastes it is nevertheless nice to see that CPO have finally released a cd recording of his mammoth symphony:

Thank you... I see that Naxos is starting a cycle of his music

The so-called Naxos "cycle" is nothing more than a re-release of the old ASV recordings. So don't get too excited!

The Herbstsymphonie really is a gorgeous work! No doubt it is too long and it is not even "my sort of music" but it would be futile to deny its beauties. As an example of Romantic Music it is genuinely definitive!

....and here is something astonishing. The performance comes from June 2018. It has taken CPO less than a year to get it onto cd!! Must be unprecedented😁

Thanks Grandenorm, I also wanted to post a similar comment :-)
Anyway, these recordings are excellent. They were published between 2003 and 2005.

Despite my reservations about some of the music I've heard about this composer,(although,I quite like his Piano Concerto. Particularly, the first movement!) I think I may be ,sorely, tempted by the Cpo release?!! It seems to be Marx's equivalent of Brian's Gothic,in some ways?!

Well, it sounds nothing like the Gothic but I think you might like it. The symphony has certainly grown on me....despite it being not normally the sort of music I like particularly well. It IS beautifully written and sustains its length...just!

"Herbstsymphonie" and "Castelli Romani" contain some Respighi-like passages. On the other hand, the "children's play" opening episode of "Pini di Roma", which can be discovered in "Herbstsymphonie", was written in 1921, three years before "Pini". "Castelli" was written in 1929-30. The two composers knew eachother personally.
However, Marx's almost-quotation of Schreker's Prelude to "Die Gezeichneten" is more embarrassing!

Indeed, the comparisons with Respighi are well made.It is
