Title: David Matthews Symphony No.9
Post by: Dundonnell on September 03, 2018, 08:52:23 pm
Although we are still waiting (certainly in my case very eagerly) for the release of the Chandos disc containing the Symphony No.8, the orchestral "A Vision of the Sea" and "Toward Sunrise" it is great to be able to report that the Symphony No.9 has been recorded by the English Symphony Orchsstra under Kenneth Woods for Nimbus. The Symphony will be coupled with "two pieces for strings". I am not sure what these could be. The obvious candidates would be the unrecorded "Three Birds and a Farewell", op.118 and/or "A June Song", op.140a and/or "Two Pieces from the Seasons". However in whatever combination that would still make for a very short cd in timing: the symphony is 25 minutes long and the longest combination of the other works would still come to less than 50 minutes.

What would you have liked as a coupling?

Most of David Matthews's major works have already been committed to disc (although I admit to having forgotten the more substantial Two Pieces for strings, op.70-22 minutes in length). The Double Concerto for Violin, Viola and strings, op. 122 (2013) although (like most of the composer's recent music not lengthy) would seem to be one deserving of a recording.

.....and indeed the Double Concerto IS on the forthcoming release :)

Nimbus will be releasing the recording of the Symphony No.9 and the Double Concerto for Violin, Viola and Strings in May.

(Now, Chandos....what about releasing your recording of Symphony No.8 !!!)

I see Symphony 8 is being broadcast on R3 next Monday afternoon (March 25th) as part of their Afternoon Concert, in what I assume is the recorded performance due to appear on Chandos - might this mean it is due for release soon? It would be worth tuning in to see if they say so as part of the announcement!

I posted on the Musicweb Noticeboard about the non-appearance of the disc containing the Symphony No.8, "A Vision of the Sea" and "Toward Sunrise". In response Ralph Couzens of Chandos posted to say that Chandos had no plans to issue such a disc-this despite the apparent original plan to do so as indicated on the composer's own website in 2016.

In a combination of confusion, embarrassment and alarm I emailed David Matthews to seek clarity. David has just responded.

The cd will be issued by Signum in June 2020.

Although it will be disappointing to have to wait another full year for the disc at least we now have the clarity sought! Why the change of label? David did not say and it would now be best to pass over this in silence.

Delighted to see that this will now appear on Signum in early January, something to look forward to in these dark times!
