Maestro Maslanka died of cancer. He outlived his wife for only one month. He was one of the greatest composers for Wind Orchestra, not only of the USA but of the world. He wrote 9 symphonies, 8 of them for wind orchestra; only the 6th was for orch. He is a very fine composer and his music deserves to be better known. It is very well known in the wind world but some consider that second tier. There is big difference in the quality of compositions for wind orchestra, and the same can be said of the wind orchestras. But works of Maslanka, or De Meij (to name just two) played by the best orchestras are of a very high standard (IMHO) and give a lot of listening pleasure.
