Title: I'm back!
Post by: kyjo on September 04, 2017, 08:36:46 pm
Hi all!

Some of you may remember me as "kyjo" from a couple years ago. Well, I'm back under a different username! I'll keep things brief. I'm a college student majoring in cello performance and I love listening to a wide variety of classical music. My primary area of interest is late-romantic and tonal 20th century music (mainly orchestral and chamber). I'm really into exploring lesser-known repertoire, and I think that the "standard repertoire" these days is ridiculously limited. My favorite "famous" composers include Rachmaninoff, Sibelius, Dvorak, Brahms, Ravel, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Elgar, Vaughan Williams, and Mahler. Some lesser-known composers who I believe are deserving of much wider exposure include but are not limited to: Atterberg (hence my username ;D), Braga Santos, Hanson, Piston, Martinu, Melartin, Roussel, Englund, Arnold, Glazunov, Szymanowski, Berwald, Dohnanyi, Arnold, Raff, Rontgen, Weinberg, Enescu, Zemlinsky, Bax, Alwyn, Ginastera, Holmboe, Honegger, Andreae, Villa-Lobos, A. Merikanto, etc. Looking forward to sharing my musical discoveries with you all again :)

Those of us who were active on this forum during your previous incarnation always valued your well-informed posts, characterised by eagerness to explore new repertoire and by your courtesy towards other members. When you "disappeared" several of us were very sad and expressed the hope that one day you might be able to return. I am sure therefore that I speak for others in warmly welcoming you back  :) :)

How do we know it's really you and not some clever imposter?

Whatever the case, how about an explanation for why you disappeared for so long and what you've been doing?

In a way it's kind of a let down you're back.   I mean that by leaving as you did without any notice to the forum or expectation by us it would happen after being so omnipresent here for so long, and then never reappearing, you created a kind of mystique for yourself, leaving us all in wonder and even suspense over what might have transpired.  For a time we psychoanalyzed you, working hard to discern your possible motives and rationale for the departure, hoping for a reunion,  and then even a couple of times over the years creating specific threads of reminiscence reflecting back on our old friend and departed hero with wistfulness and fondness.

You were just on the brink of attaining an almost mythical status in AMF lore, - one could even say having effectively become the very first entrant in AMF's fledgling "ring of fame", - and now you explode all that by so  banally and undramatically returning with no more than a "hi everyone"?

For myself it's all more than a little disappointing. ;)

Kyle and I have talked privately and I can confirm that he really is who he says he is Yes, there was some considerable discussion of his "disappearance" by members at the time but I don't  believe that puts him or anybody else in similar circumstances under any obligation to discuss their personal life with us-and that could well encompass reasons for being silent on an internet forum. I am told by friends with more experience than I that some folk who use forums create alternative identities and espouse views in which they do not actually believe as an elaborate charade. This, apparently, gives them "fun". I am certain this is not the case here (well, fairly certain). As is pretty well-known I am a (perhaps excessively!) literal sort of person. I am very glad to see the return of a valued member of this forum and am happy to leave it at that

No one was making any demands, but merely expressing curiosity.

Well,fancy that! :o Welcome back,kyjo...oops (Oh,BrianA's done that one! :( ;D),Atterbergman. We've missed you! :) :) :)

Honestly I wish Kyjo was still "Kyjo".  "Atterbergman" is just, well, a little bit unwieldly and too multi-syllabic a compound for my taste at least, quite without the pith and hipness of "Kyjo".  BTW, it may seem just a mite "far out there" to admit, but my mind and imagination always by phonetic association equated "Kyjo" with "Kato" (as in Kato Kaelin of O.J. Simpson murder trial fame), - with the result being that whenever I used to read Kyjo's posts a visual likeness of Kato would immediately flash in my brain and identify itself with how Kyjo must truly look in real life.  Kind of bizarre I acknowledge, but indelible.

Kyle,

In case you missed it, for a possibly curious read of all the speculation and concern here at the time of your departure, check out the "What has happened to Kyjo (Kyle)?" thread archived on Page 2 in the "Miscellany" section of AMF.

Just wondering, Greg, whether you might like ME to change my forum name from the multi-syllabic "Dundonnell" to something more "hip"? If so, any suggestions?

I am joking of course

Multi-syllabic as "Dundonnell" indeed is, it does have a certain readable and enunciatory verve and flair to it that's quite pleasing and even perfect for you in its way.  The real problem with "Atterbergman" was not its lumbering multi-syllables per se, but the fact that it's just so literal and unimaginative.  Granted that "Greg K" offends even moreso in those prosaic qualities, but the point is that if you're going to play the allusively oriented game here with your identity, some choices work better than others, - and who would disagree that "Atterbergman" needed to be immediately scrapped?  "Kyjo" (and none other) is Kyle for us at AMF.  You can't turn your back on history.

I must not take this thread too far off on a tangent.....but I cannot avoid your phrase "enunciatory verve and flair" ;)

Assuming-as I always do ;)-that you mean what you say..........danke, mein Freunde ;)

....and, yes, "Kyjo" is right :)

Back by popular demand?!! ;D Yes,a disappearance that has stimulated much debate;and,indeed,a dedicated thread. It reminds me of a pub I used to go to. I remember not going there for a few months. When I finally went back,I mentioned this to a chap who always used to lean on the bar,there. He looked at me in surprise. "Really?," he said,"I didn't notice!" :(
I wonder if anyone finds Cilgwyn unwieldy? It's Welsh,and pronounced Kill-gwin,by the way. It's a small hamlet in North Pembrokeshire in West Wales. I spent allot of happy times there as a youngster. It just came to mind when I was trying to think up a user name. I'm not an imposter by the way!! ;D At least,I don't think I am?!! :-\ ::) ;D I'll just go and check me fingerprints,now. You never know!! :( :o

But do any of us truly have genuine "personal characteristics" here, or merely "personas", - the impressions and descriptions of which by others shouldn't be regarded as personally judgmental or intrusive, but only as a kind of play or "theatre"?

Title: Re: I'm back!

Yes... here are the all the rules:
 there are just a few essential rules:

    No bad language or unpleasant subjects please;
    No discussion of the personal characteristics or motives of fellow members - courtesy must come first;
    Of course nothing illegal;
    Contributors should in general attempt to keep to the subject of the thread in which they are posting - the idea is that each message will refer back to, and expand upon, what has already been said by others;
    If disparaging remarks about the moral character of any musician (living or dead) are posted, a reference to some published authority should be cited as support and justification;
    And no hawkers or canvassers thank you, it is an entirely unsuitable location.

Also please note that new members are expected to make at least three posts in their first two weeks, and the membership of people who have contributed nothing for six months will be automatically cancelled.

We trust that Members will not find these rules restrictive in any way. The great thing is to enjoy the experience!

I didn't see anything about that posts about Shostakovich were not allowed??!?

They are allowed, but in moderation, because he is certainly not "unsung" is he. What are not allowed are copyright recordings of performances of his works. Personally I cannot abide any of his wearisome stuff, but that is beside the point.

That's odd, because I have been a member of this forum since its inception, and it has never been the Unsung Composers Forum (although fans of Unsung Composers are certainly welcome here, alongside others).

When I scroll to the top of the page, it clearly says The Art-Music Forum in large, bold lettering. It furthermore tells us that the forum enables discussion of
Quote
all the Arts in an erudite and decorous atmosphere full of freedom and delight
. There is nothing about Shostakovich, Unsung Composers, or any other specific composers.

Exactly; indeed, the same thought occurred to me when I noted with surprise the reference to "unsung" in this forum...

Yes.. sometimes his symphonies remind me of sour milk.....and some of Prokofiev.. the same...   story about Glazunov walking out of a Prokofiev symphony performance shaking his head back and worth.. muttering "what the hell have we created".....

Threads can veer off topic to a quite extraordinary extent and I am guilty of going off on a tangent as any but extremely negative comment on the merits or demerits of the music of Shostakovich seem singularly ill-placed here

There's a great deal more to Shostakovich than just his symphonies, wonderful as most of those are and none of which remind me of any kind of milk, but each to their own, I guess. It's interesting how people's tastes can change, though, even without obvious reason; Sorabji wrote some of the most barbed criticisms of Shostakovich in the 1940s and occasionally also before and after that decade, yet in the 1970s he persuaded himself to listen to a number of his works including the first violin concerto and fourth, tenth and thirteenth symphonies and was so impressed by them that he confessed to Ronald Stevenson that anyone who could not appreciate Shostakovich as a Master would be inept. He must have remembered some of what he'd written about him way back when because he expressed to me his concern as to whether Shostakovich might ever have read or been told about any of it; despite assuring him that I thought this most unlikely, he felt moved to draft a letter of apology to Shostakovich but it was never sent because this was in August 1975...

By the way,I'm back,too! Some of you,with very short memories,may remember me from my last post on September 10th,before I mysteriously disappeared for the last two days,leading to absolutely no debate as to my personal welfare or whereabouts,let alone a "Where's that blighter,Cilgwyn got to?",thread!
I'm now going to mysteriously disappear and reappear again..........possibly,in a couple of hours time....months,days or years?!! (Haven't decided yet!) I may return with a new "nickname"If you see a new member posting here under the name of Houdini,it could be me? Alternatively,it could be that the great man has finally brought off his greatest ever trick?! If you see two new members posting under the name of Houdini,that could be awkward!! :( ::)
