Never did I ever hope to hear Leiviska's music in any form, much less a symphony! Truly, may God bless you.  Do you have anything that might make a good discmate?

This was Meriläinen's first work for piano & orchestra at the time the sleeve note was written.
It was brought to us by Philips as part of their Contemporary Music Series, in which 3 lp's with fairly unknown Finnish composers, let alone their works.

Heininen, born in Helsinki, had his musical training there at the Sibelius Academy. He had his diploma for piano and composition.
Among his teachers are Aarre Merikanto, Einar Englund, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Usko Meriläinen and Jonas Kokkonen. Later he studied in Cologne (Staatliche Musik Hochschule -with Rudolf Petold and Bernd-Alois Zimmermann-) and in New York (Juilliard School of Music - with Vincent Persichetti and Edward Steuermann-).
After his studies he became a member of the teaching staff of the Sibelius Academy.
His compositions are extremely concentrated and complex music.

Einojuhani Rautavaara (b 1928)  -  String Quartet Nº 3, op 18 (1966) [in one movement]

Delmé String Quartet
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?th0f44f92k18aeu (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?th0f44f92k18aeu)

Again a work that was a prize-winner at the Camden Festival. With this work Rautavaara won the first prize in the string-quartet division. First performance there Feb 20,1967. It was played by the same quartet as we hear in this post and to whom it was dedicated.

from lp Philips 802855 LY

Joonas Kokkonen (1921-1996)  -  String Quartet Nº 2 (1966)

Delmé Quartet

from lp Philips 802855 LY

Kokkonen was in the 1960s one of the international best known Finnish composers.
He was the first symphonist elected to the Academy of Finland and served as chairman of the Finnish Society of Composers. He was also a professor at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and as such the teacher of a.o. Rautavaara.

His quartet starts with a contemplative Passacaglia, followed by a charming Intermezzo. It is followed by a dramatic Allegro vivace and close by a serene Epilogo.
May be this quartet show best that the composer has a perfect feeling for writing for string instruments.

Usko Meriläinen (1930-2004)  -  Second Piano Sonata (1966)
The Sonata consists of three movements: 1 A tempo variable (Lento-Mosso); 2. Lento; 3. Presto.

Yonti Solomon, piano

In this work Meriläinen passed clearly the experimental stage. The work won the piano division of the Camden Festival from 1967 (Feb 22nd). The work was played by the young South-African pianist who also plays here.

Kalevi Aho  -  Symphony No. 6

As requested.

It's from a Finnish broadcast, but I have no info on the performers, or on the dates. I think the tape was made in 2010, but that's all. The other works on the tape are with the Finnish Radio SO, with Vänska conducting.

I must warn you that especially in the beginning the sound is pretty bad (far too loud recorded). Later on its better.

Re-upload from UC... just want to make sure you don't miss this one!

Salmenhaara (1941-2002):  Symphony No. 4 “Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita” ("Midway upon the journey of our life") (1972)

Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra/Ulf Suderblom

http://www.mediafire.com/?8bxx125tt1a5atd (http://www.mediafire.com/?8bxx125tt1a5atd)

… supplied to me by a friend in England in the 1970’s, probably from a BBC broadcast…
… a profound and profoundly thoughtful symphony…
… observe the coincidence of the title and his dates…

Thanks so much for posting this..something about Salmenhaara's music stirs my soul..

Why do people who know better still post comments where music downloads belong? Jolly Roger does this frequently.

I don't think that's appropriate. Karelian Finns should only be included in the Soviet section if there's any connection with the Soviet Union.

The annexation of most of Karelia by Stalin in 1939 and again in 1945 is no argument; in that case, all German composers from Eastern Prussia or even the Baltics would have to been included too. Do you really post Heinz Tiessen (1887–1971, from Könisgberg) or Otto Nicolai, or Eduard Erdmann (1896-1958), under the Soviet section?  ::)

In the early 1950s the Finnish composers union isued a series of monaural LP recordings on the Fennica label, comprising a wide variety of Finnish symphonic music, much of it contemporary at the time. Works by Jean Sibelius figure prominently, and included several short pieces that were somewhat of a novelty at the time (such as The Dryad and Pan and Echo). I don't know definitively how many discs were finally issued, possibly fifteen or sixteen from what I remember reading somewhere years ago. They were never distributed outside Finland, though they were available by mail order internationally -- that's how I got my first ones back around 1970. Ultimately, I managed to accumulate the first twelve discs in the series, and I've greatly enjoyed the music on them. I believe the discs after these first twelve were more oriented to Finnish folk music. Apart from much rare repertoire, the series is also noteworthy for otherwise unavailable recordings by Jussi Jalas and Tauno Hannikainen, and a very early recording by Paavo Berglund.

The condition of the discs, acquired over the years from a variety of sources, varies greatly. Some pressings are better than others, some discs are noisier than others. In a few instances I managed to find more than one copy and I digitized the one in better condition, so by and large the rips are pretty good (they were done about eight years ago). Noise reduction was applied with Wave Corrector but no attempt at equalization or other improvement has been made. One work, unfortunately, has a few skips that I was unable to overcome -- Sibelius' Spring Song. If anyone wishes to improve on the sound, feel free to do so. All the jacket art was uniform, with the works on the disc listed at the bottom of the jacket front. The jacket rear listed the complete contents of all the discs that had been issued up to that time, so the earlier discs issued had fewer listings on the back. There is no identification on the jacket as to the number of the disc -- that information can only be gotten from the disc labels. You can find some examples on the Discogs website.

These files take up a chunk of space on my Mega account, so I will not be leaving them up indefinitely. Please do not share these links outside the forum.

The story of Kullervo is well-known to Sibelius aficionados. Premiered to critical acclaim in 1892. After four more performances over the following year, the complete work was never again performed during Sibelius' lifetime, though individual movements were performed over the years. Shortly before he died, Sibelius re-orchestrated the work and gave permission for it to be published and performed after his death. Sibelius's son-in-law Jussi Jalas led the first performance of the reorchestrated version in June 1958. A recording of that performance was released on a private label, Saturnian Records (possibly the only release ever issued on this label!), and the recording here is a rip from that very rare 2-LP set. Issued in a plain blue gatefold jacket with a hand-drawn cover and typed program notes, both on photocopied sheets glued to the jacket. Scans of those and the side 1 label are appended here. To the best of my knowledge this recording has never been reissued in any form.

Thank you Latvian.... I have several recorded versions of this work.   One of the best pieces he ever wrote.
As we speak, listening to the Saraste version with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Latvian,  the Kullervo is called the Kullervo Symphony... and I've always thought of the Lemminkainen Legends as a quasi symphony also.. even though it is programmatic in nature, it still has the 4 part symphony structure.

Yes, the official Sibelius website calls it Kullervo Symphony, but almost everyone else including the work's publisher simply titles it Kullervo, which is why I refer to it as such. If you look at Discogs you'll see that every recording but one titles it just Kullervo, presumably in deference to the published score, which was presumably endorsed by the  executors of the composer's estate.

The program notes on the link you provided says Sibelius consistently refers to the work as a symphony.  It literally says Sibelius didn't refer to this as a suite but as his first symphony.

And, indeed, this is how I refer to the work in my upload above:

Kullervo, Op. 7 (symphony, 1892)
