I see that Nikolaus Harnoncourt has died at the age of 86.

Although I am not qualified to comment on his very substantial reputation as an interpreter of early music I am also aware that he did turn in later years to the romantic repertoire of the 19th and 20th centuries. I have a marvellous recording of the Bruckner 7th with the Vienna Philharmonic under Harnoncourt. He was one of the last of the great Austrian conductors of his generation.
