Title: Forthcoming John Knowles Paine Orchestral Music from Naxos
Post by: kyjo on December 16, 2012, 04:11:55 am
Naxos' latest newsletter reveals plans for recording two discs of the orchestral music of the American Romantic composer John Knowles Paine (1839-1906), with JoAnn Falletta as conductor. The contents of the first planned disc will be Paine's Symphony no. 1, "The Tempest", and the "As You Like It" overture. The second planned disc is set to include his Symphony no. 2 and prelude from his opera "Azara". Although the two symphonies and the "As You Like It" overture have already been recorded by Mehta and the NYPO on New World Records, it shall be interesting to hear Falletta's take on this music as well as the two previously unrecorded pieces. So, in conclusion...Naxos' American Classics series is alive and well :)! See here for more info: http://www.naxos.com/news/default.asp?op=1037&displayMenu=Naxos_News&type=2

Actually, The Tempest was recorded by Karl Krueger in his wonderful American music series in the 1960s, and he also recorded the Moorish Dance from Azara, though not the Prelude. In any event, I applaud Naxos for this release and look forward to it!

Good catch, Maris! But since it was on an old LP (which I don't collect), a new recording will be greatly welcomed :). The Moorish Dance from Azara can be heard on YouTube on the wonderful channel of robt0007.

For those interested in more orchestral Paine, his Hymn to the West for chorus and orchestra (1903, 6 minutes) is on YouTube on the channel of jksteven1 :)
