Title: Orchestrated songs and short orchestral pieces by Kuula and Hakola from Alba
Post by: kyjo on December 03, 2012, 08:03:30 pm
Please excuse the rather long thread title I have come up with ;D! Anyways, this upcoming disc from Alba, titled "On the Fields of Tapiola", will center around orchestrations of the music of the tragically short-lived Finnish late-romantic composer Toivo Kuula (1883-1918), as well as the easily accessible contemporary composer Kimmo Hakola (b. 1958). The contents of this CD are:

-Toivo Kuula/arr. Kimmo Hakola for baritone and chamber orchestra: Twelve South Ostrobothnian Folk Songs, op. 17b (1908-09/2012)

-Toivo Kuula/arr. Sulho Ranta (1901-1960) for string orchestra: Prelude and Intermezzo, op. 16 (1909/1930?)

-Kimmo Hakola: Kivi Songs for baritone and string orchestra (2007/arr. for strings 2011)

-Toivo Kuula/arr. Pekka Helasvuo (b. 1948) for string orchestra: "The Song of the Sea", op. 11/2 (1909/2003)

-Toivo Kuula/arr. Juho Naykki (b. 1945) for string orchestra: Wedding March, op. 3b/2 (1908/2011)

The performers are Jorma Hynninen (baritone) and the South Ostrobothnian CO under Juha Kangas. Should be a unique CD and definitely one to look forward to! See here for more details: http://www.alba.fi/en/shop/products/4990
