Title: Sgambati Symphony no. 1 etc. from Naxos
Post by: kyjo on November 22, 2012, 07:26:49 pm
Another exciting upcoming release, this time from the ever-dependable Naxos :). Giovanni Sgambati's Symphony no. 1 in D major, op. 16 has been recorded twice before, but one is severely OOP and can only be purchased (if you still can) through French Amazon and the other recording on the Music and Arts label (widely available) is a two-piano reduction. So...it's about time for a new, professional recording of this substantial (43 minute) symphony ;D! The coupling is the substantial (18 minute) overture "Cola de Rienzo", which has already been recorded on Asv, but since it was coupled with the PC (which I already had in Bolet's magisterial recording), I didn't bother buying that CD. The performers are the Rome Symphony under Francesco La Vecchia, the same team that gave us an excellent survey of the orchestra music of Alfredo Casella as well as a disc of Malipiero's orchestral works (I hope they explore this composer's output further by recording his symphonies) :).

There are rumors floating around that Naxos will eventually record Sgambati's Symphonies 2 and 3 as well. Let's hope those rumors are correct :)...

You might want to go edit that first post, Kyle.  The symphony is in D Major, not minor.  Although it's understandable, since the link says both.  The D minor is an error.

Naxos will certainly record n.2 (the source here is wholly authoritative). Almost certainly The "Epitalamio sinfonico" or "Sinfonia Epitalamia" .
