Title: Henry Cotter Nixon(1842-1907) and Mendelssohn Piano Trios from Guild Post by: kyjo on November 16, 2012, 03:01:10 am Yeah, I know-that cheap old marketing trick of coupling an "unsung" piece with a "sung" one is present here, but you'd got to admit the Henry Cotter Nixon Piano Trio no. 1 in C major will be something to look forward to hearing :). It's not that often that we get recordings of such obscure 19th century British music, so we should be thankful to Guild for bringing this substantial (48 minute!) trio to disc. This premier recording of Henry Cotter Nixon's Piano Trio No. 1 from 1879 is another example of the myth that no British music of worth was composed between Handel and Elgar. Although influenced by the Germanic musical culture of Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn the melody opening the andante is an example of the late Victorian Anglican hymn.
